I knew that divorce is not God’s Plan for our life, neither are ‘unequally yoked’ marriages. I also knew that a child born outside of marriage lives with the heartbreak of one parent not being present in their life. But I never realised until three-and-a-half years ago, that the decisions taken by parents, which are against God’s Word, have an automatic negative spiritual effect on the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren – unless the curse is broken!
We humans don’t like the idea of ‘spiritual consequence’ related to choices that we make. But whether we like it or not, doesn’t matter. This is not a matter of personal opinion: as I explained in my previous article, God’s Word stands in Eternity:
“Your word, Lord, is eternal;
it stands firm in the heavens.” – Psalm 119:89 (NIV)
And one of the laws which God has spoken – in fact he initially engraved it by his own finger on a stone tablet – is:
So, everyone who has committed adultery and has not repented of it, and accepted forgiveness through Jesus Christ, is living under a curse, as do their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren! The same goes with all other Biblical laws.
Maybe you’re asking: define adultery. I will do another post about the Covenant of Marriage, but for now I will just explain that any sexual activity outside of the Covenant of Marriage, is in effect an adulterous act, because it does not honour this holy covenant, which God instituted as a mirror, reflecting his love for Israel and as an example of Christ’s love for his bride, the ‘church’. Marriage between one man and one woman is the building block of a healthy society and any society which disregards this, soon finds itself in a social mess. I’m not judging people. I’m stating a spiritual fact, to raise awareness of the probability of a curse on our life, our children’s lives, our grandchildren’s lives or our great-grandchildren’s lives…if we don’t confess our sin (meaning: if we don’t accept that what we did was against God’s Word), repent (meaning: stop engaging in adulterous activities) and ask for forgiveness, through Jesus Christ, and break these curses!
What kinds of effects do curses have, you may ask. Basically, every bad thing that we can imagine, could be the result of a curse! Matthew 17 tells the story of a boy, who was having seizures, because he was possessed by a demon. Sickness and death are generally the result of ‘sin’ – of doing something against God’s Word. Yes, if a believer is ill or experiences challenges, these may be allowed by God as a test to strengthen the faith of the person involved, or the people around them. But everyone else is ‘free game’ for the devil, who can send spirits causing all kinds of harm, including diseases, depression, self-harm, violence, addiction, even rape – the list is found in Deuteronomy 28, verse 15 onwards.
As I explained in one of my previous posts, the devil has limited resources. So he will ‘invest’ his energy – meaning the evil spirits he has command over – in those people and situations who either bring the most success to him (for instance, celebrities who have fallen victim to addiction and commit suicide, AFTER they have misled millions to follow their ‘evil’ ways…), or who are most dangerous to him (people in active ministry – every pastor, missionary or believer in Jesus Christ who actively shares God’s Word can write a book about this!), or jews – God’s original Chosen People – and their descendants in general (pogroms, enslavement, holocaust and ongoing suicide attacks by religious fanatics who hate them and have been caught by spirits of fanaticism) and the descendants of highly fruitful “kingdom builders”, such as missionaries and pastors (I personally know a number of “PKs” – “Pastor’s Kids” who were tempted and lost their faith – I believe, temporarily, because there are people praying for them!), as well as hugely influential kingdom builders themselves (just google ‘fallen pastors’)…
Generally speaking, the devil will often leave lukewarm Christians and unbelievers alone – although the result of automatic curses still affects them. He knows they’re in his pocket already! So you may find people living seemingly successful lives their whole life, even people who build generational wealth doing business, which is called ‘ethical’, but ultimately, such people, who have lived their lives without honouring God and accepting Jesus Christ as their Saviour, are… lost in Eternity!
As I said in my previous post, I never wanted to get involved in deliverance ministry – I didn’t want to engage in casting out demons or breaking curses, it was all too strange for my very logical mind and too messy for my rather neat and organised Lutheran Church.
But in 2021 God took me by the hand to first teach me through YouTube videos, with scripturally-based knowledge, about the acute need for deliverance ministry in this modern world. I knew this to be true, because of my own experiences with the ‘unseen’ world over the years. I’ve told the story about a demon trying to physically strangle me one night in a previous post. I will tell the story about a demon at a yoga ashram in Canada in a future post.
But today I want to tell the story of ‘Iris’.
In 2021 I had been watching and learning from many wonderful, Holy Spirit-filled teachers for the previous seven months, my hunger and desire to learn more and to live in even closer relationship to God growing more and more. I had seen the pain that people go through all around me, and I wanted to be able to help. And if that meant, understanding the ‘root of the curse’ – any curse – I wanted to have that knowledge, so that I could help others come out of this terrible bondage, that was preventing them from living their lives ABUNDANTLY, in relationship to God, through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Then, most unexpectedly, Holy Spirit gave me a ‘real-life’ case of demonic possession to handle!
As I explained before, I never felt ‘qualified’ to deal with these supernatural problem cases that I had come across during the more than two decades of working with unemployed youth and teenagers at a boarding school. I would refer them to others, who I hoped could and would help, and – to be quite honest – avoided getting involved, because my plate was so full and I simply didn’t have the ‘headspace’ to focus on deliverance ministry.
Clearly, God had other plans for me.
A practical example of ‘demonic manifestation’
In the middle of this year 2021, when I was still fighting for the survival of my business, coping with being widowed and learning more and more spiritual knowledge through YouTube – which brought me to research the Bible more deeply than I ever had before – something truly extraordinary happened!
One day, as I was picking up my mobile phone, I saw a name pop up on my WhatsApp notifications, which I hadn’t seen in at least 30 years! For privacy’s sake, I will use the name ‘Iris’. Someone had added ‘Iris’ to a WhatsApp group I was connected to. I hadn’t thought of Iris since my late twenties, when I had heard that she had emigrated with her husband and son to another country, like so many South Africans do. Although I had always liked Iris, who was a few years younger than I, we didn’t have a strong connection, so when I heard she emigrated I didn’t pursue any specific way to stay in touch.
So, what was so surprising for me, was that immediately when I saw the name ‘Iris’ pop up in a WhatsApp notification on my mobile phone, in the middle of the day, while I was rushing somewhere, I heard God say: “Help Iris.” I immediately protested in my ‘spirit’, arguing with God, saying:
“You can’t be serious, Father! I am barely coping myself! How on earth must I help Iris (who was living in another country)?”
But as soon as I had thought those words, my conscience (Holy Spirit) convicted me and I felt bad that I had argued with God! I was still in a hurry, but I did say a very quick prayer for Iris, nothing more than: “God, you know there’s nothing I can do to help Iris, but I pray in the Name of your Son Jesus Christ, that you will help her.” That’s it.
Three months and a lot of fascinating experiences later, which ultimately resulted in me getting together four people across three continents via WhatsApp, to pray for Iris’ delivery from demons, two of them going to pick her up, as she was sitting screaming and crying on the floor of a hotel reception desk in the country she had emigrated to! This was happening in the early hours of the morning in South Africa, while she was in a completely different timezone. In a most unbelievable way, Holy Spirit had guided me to pray my very first deliverance prayer for someone else!
The result was astonishing: a couple of days later, while I was talking with Iris on her mobile phone, she told me that she had had a vision seeing God, the Father, on the Throne in Heaven and that after that experience, she had been given the gift of seeing which people to trust and which people to avoid, based on the ability of seeing their spirits. This had been the turn-around moment for her, where after many years of living in a terrible state of manic depression and forced prescription drug use, which had ultimately resulted in her living like a ‘mad woman’ on the streets of the city where I eventually found her, in a most supernatural manner, she was finally open to accepting help!
When I asked her about the timing of that vision, I realised that it was on the very day that I had first seen her name pop up on my WhatsApp screen and the short, hurried prayer, which I had spoken for her… I realised that the Holy Spirit had prompted me to pray for her and that God had heard, accepted and acted on my prayer – no matter how short and hurried!
Over the next eight months God took me on a journey to accompany Iris, until – again in a most miraculous way – he used me to connect her to a place where she has been living safely and productively since then, while God is preparing her for the next step in her life.
Through this journey I learnt about the impact of curses, including generational curses, and how these curses are released through the things we – yes, even we who call ourselves Christians, but live in spiritual ignorance! – do.
Unbeknownst to anyone, I learnt that Iris had been living under the curse released through her church-going father’s adultery and her parents’ subsequent divorce. This curse caused her to fall into deep depression and self-hatred as a teenager. The curse then attracted a man into her life whose family were devil-worshippers – something she didn’t know at the time. She didn’t want to marry this man, but felt pressured by her mom – who had remarried and wanted her adult daughter to move on with her life – to marry him. The mother meant well: she also didn’t realise that this man had parents who were engaging in occult practices. From the outside it looked as if things were going well. Iris built a very successful career in a large corporation. But behind the scenes, Iris’ husband was addicted to alcohol and abused her for many years, while her close family, some of whom were church-going people, literally abandoned her, because they didn’t know what to do!
The couple had a son, so she didn’t want to leave the marriage, because she didn’t want to lose her son. Also, she already was forced to take prescription medication (anti-depressants!), which suppressed her willpower to take any initiative or action. The husband took her and her son to emigrate with him and she hoped that a change of scenery would help the father of her child change. It didn’t. Again, she built a successful career, this time in the banking industry. But at home she was suffering from ongoing abuse. Eventually, this man beat her up so badly, that she was in a coma, mentally damaged.
The police came to the rescue and she was placed in a mental health institution, placed on heavy drugs. A voluntary care helper at that mental institution – who turned out to be a native witch-doctor in the country she had emigrated to – took advantage of her drugged state and kidnapped her from the mental institution: with full knowledge of the institution, which did NOTHING to stop him, because he insisted that she had moved in with him out of her own free will!
This man kept her drugged for almost a decade, so that she would comply with his will. She was moved by demons to attempt suicide in the most hysterical ways, on two of occasions, but her life was saved each time in a most miraculous way! The state social services arranged for her to find work packing cans in boxes – this is the only work she could do in her drugged mental state… after being a top performer in her banking job…
Iris’s story went on and on. By the time I saw her name on the WhatsApp Group, she was living on the street, surviving on a social grant – with no social care services! She had been thrown out of the lodgings arranged by social services, because she would have violent anger attacks (demonic manifestations), which the motel staff where she stayed of course couldn’t handle. Whenever she had one of these ‘screaming attacks’, police would pick her up and place her back into a government mental institution, where she would be drugged heavily for three months, then moved to a ‘step-down’ facility (one being a Methodist Church-run institution, where government policy enforced participation in native shaman dance rituals, as part of ‘multi-cultural integration’ activities!). She tried looking for help at Baptist Churches (her mother was a member of a Baptist Church in South Africa), but again, these pastors had no idea of what to do and would leave her out on the streets…
But God.
God gave me the privilege of being the one, through whom He could work to start RESTORATION in her life… by teaching me – through YouTube! – how to cast out demons and break generational curses in her life… from thousands of miles away!
This is why I am SO EXCITED about sharing what I have learnt with YOU!!!
We, as believers in Jesus Christ, TRULY have the “Keys to the Kingdom of God”: we can bind and we can loose! Let’s stop binding through ignorance, and let’s START LOOSING!
There’s really NO SPECIAL QUALIFICATION or EXPERIENCE required: we just have to be a WILLING VESSEL for the Holy Spirit to work through us! It is NOT about how good we are, it is all about how POWERFUL God is.
If the only thing you have learnt through reading this long article, is, that at the ROOT of all curses is turning our back on God through DISOBEDIENCE to his laws – the spiritual laws that the Bible is sharing with us. And that through FAITH in Jesus Christ we can break all these curses – which the Bible calls the “Curse of the Law“. As I explained previously, every human being who does not believe in Jesus Christ, lives under the law – the spiritual law – spoken by God and shared in the Bible.

Conclusion
I hope that you learnt something from everything that I shared here with you, the most important being that – while we ALL automatically live under curses – every curse CAN be broken through FAITH in Jesus Christ!
In fact, by gaining a CLEAR understanding of what curses are, has brought IMMENSE HOPE to me, because now that I know what causes ALL the misery in this world, I also know HOW to address this cause! By sharing my understanding with you, I am hoping that you, too, will start applying this knowledge and share it with others, so that we collectively can start CLAIMING our GOD-GIVEN AUTHORITY over the world and STOP handing it over to the devil!
Of everything that I have learnt during the thirty years I have worked in ministry and youth development and community development, this deeper understanding of CURSES and how to BREAK them, is for me the MOST SIGNIFICANT. I believe it is the key to effecting positive change all across the world, the KEY TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD. By BREAKING CURSES we, who believe in Jesus Christ, truly have the key to catalyse positive change globally.
